I teach ceramics at a high school where the ceramics program has grown greatly. We currently have 16 sections of ceramics classes. Students are grouped in classes based on their interest in visual arts.
The students are extremely interested in creating and exploring ceramics handbuilding, as well as wheelthrowing.
With that being said, there are 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders in each of the classes. Each class is comprised of around 24 students. We are in need of replacing and replenishing clay tools and equipment in order to allow the students' creativity to grow.
My Project
We have a pretty large ceramics program at Hickory. There are around 40-50 students in the ceramics studios during each block, split between 2 teachers. With our program growing so quickly, we are always in need of materials and equipment. We are currently down to only 2 dryers for all of our students
We could definitely use the addition of new blow dryers for various stages of various projects.
For some clay assignments students need a quick way to dry a project to leatherhard for stability. We use blow dryers on a hot setting to achieve this.
We also use blow dryers to dry the layers of glaze when we are glazing our ceramic projects. It is important that each layer dry before another layer is painted on in order to achieve good coverage of glaze.
It is important for us to add new dryers to replace the ones that have stopped working in order to increase productivity. It is also important since there such a large volume of students working in the ceramic studio every day.
