My students need diapers, baby wipes, two board books for their babies, the young adult novel Learning to Breathe, and a diaper bag.

Our school is a Title I school located in Oklahoma City. Our school serves a multicultural population of students and their children. The library program develops research skills, fosters independent reading, encourages exploration and creativity through S.T.E.A.M.-related projects, as well as facilitates cooperation through game and team building activities. Unfortunately, without any sort of budget, collection development and continuous growth prove difficult. My student patrons are resourceful, resilient, and reflective readers who are raising their children to do the same. Together, we are hoping that your generosity and support will help turn our obstacles into accessible opportunities!
Many of the teen mothers in my Teens with Tots pre-literacy program struggle with housing insecurity. Some reside in the neighborhood homeless shelter, while others float from place to place. As a result, many of the moms (and their babies) have a dire need for diapers. The aforementioned need has resulted in many diaper rashes and yeast infections amongst the children that have resulted from reuse and/or overuse of an already soiled pamper. This is largely due to the fact that government assistance programs like WIC (Women Infants and Children) do not provide diapers. The mothers, who are already struggling with food and housing insecurities, simply do not have the $3000.00 it would cost to purchase the 6-9 thousand diaper changes their child would need from birth to potty training.
"Infancy is the period of life when a person is most likely to live in a homeless shelter" -The Federal Administration of Children and Families.
The diapers and baby wipes would be used to maintain the hygiene of their children; diaper bags would be used to transport the diapers back and forth from home to school, and vice versa; and, board books/novel would be used to spread the love of literacy from mother to child.
The fetor and fear of sullying their own clothes when they hold their babies in their laps to read to them is just another impediment in their fight to spread the love of literacy to their children. The ultimate goal of this project is to reduce parenting stress, so they, the mothers, can focus on their studies and feel competent, as well as, confident about raising happy, healthy babies.
