I teach computer technology to Kindergarten-7th-grade high-need, low-income students in a large, urban, public school district in New Jersey.
Our students are primarily Hispanic and Arabic, and include a high number of special education students.
More than 85% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students are technology disadvantaged, both at home and at school, because they do not have access to a variety of new devices like other Americans. Essentially, they only have computers, and in today's workforce, nearly every job uses a computer of some sort. It is essential that our students have an opportunity to use other devices to simulate real-world experiences.
My Project
I have moved to a different school within my district. Although I have a nice room (shared with the library) , it is lacking a few things that I believe is important. I am asking for a dry erase table to use as a center in my computer lab. We can use this for STEM activities and well as an area to prepare our projects and brainstorm ideas! It is extremely important to take care of the schools equipment and teach the students its value. They need to be encouraged to take good care of the schools property so we can benefit while learning from our given resources. Computer technology offers us a unique way to inspire hard-to-reach students and help them learn and grow. They need to know that the equipment they use is purchased for their benefit and needs to be taken care of. This gives them a way to see how the world works and know that you have to work hard for everything you have! Without donors like you, many classrooms throughout the country would go without supplies that aren't figured out in our school budgets for the year.
