Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a public Colorado elementary school located in a high-poverty community. Our school is a turnaround school that has shown headline-worthy academic growth over the past few years. We work under the motto, "Happy kids learn more!" and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our students' success.
I work as a reading interventionist and the students I serve are loving, enthusiastic and want to learn how to read and write for the first time.
My Project
Our district has already announced devastating budget cuts next year due to the impact of COVID-19. Our school funding was already low, and next year will be even lower. We need support to get these materials in the hands of our amazing students. Although we have been teaching remotely throughout this Spring, it's just not the same as being right next to a teacher in a classroom, and our students will have a lot of learning to make up when we get back in school. It is more important than ever to have the necessary learning materials.
The approach we use includes explicit phonics instruction with many, many opportunities to practice!
We do a LOT of work on dry erase boards, and our dry erase markers have mostly run out of ink! These markers will provide our students with lots of meaningful practice writing sounds and words! These markers will also help us save our very limited copy paper supply!
My students and I so deeply appreciate that there are so many people out there who want to support us! Thank you so much for considering our project and helping us keep learning when we get back to school!
