Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher to 27 students in the Bronx. This year our school has bought into a new math program called Everyday math. The math program has a daily exercise called Mental Math and Reflexes. During this activity, students are supposed to use their dry erase slate and their dry erase markers to answer a math question. The slate activity is done in this manner so that teachers have a quick way to check children's work as they respond to questions and display their answers on their slates.
This is not the only time where slates and dry erase boards are used and needed. During Month by Month Phonics there is a game called secret word. Students are told that they can use specific letters of the alphabet. Students are then asked to create different words using the specified letters and clues.
Slates are also used during a center activity called Word Zone. Word Zone is a center activity taken out of the Rigby Literacy Series. Students use the slates during centers to practice specific phonemic skills learned during the shared reading mini lesson.
As you can see the dry erase slates are a very productive tool for learning in my classroom. I am sure that there are more uses for the slates which I will discover this year. However, without dry erase markers, the slates are useless. It is for this reason that I am requesting dry erase markers for my students.
Thank you for considering my proposal.
