This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Kindergarten teacher at P.S. 49 in the South Bronx. My twenty-two students come from the surrounding neighborhood and are adorable, hard working, five- and six-year olds. Our class is beginning to read and write beautifully, and greatly benefit from interactive writing and math experiences using small white boards. We regularly do not have enough dry erase markers for the students, as they are expensive and dry out quickly. Dry erase markers allow the students to participate as a class and often make new realizations in their writing and math skills. Further, they love using the small white boards! It makes them feel as if they are all teachers and is far more effective than pen and paper. These experiences serve as a great motivator and learning tool for the class. They allow instruction to not be centered on the teacher, but instead on each student. I am requesting a four pack of dry erase markers for each of my twenty-two students. They will have some sense of ownership over their dry erase pack, taking careful care of the markers in an effort to not dry them out. It will give them the opportunity to participate in classwide experiences and learn together. White boards are incredibly effective tools for enhancing instruction. Sadly, we have had to cut down on the number of interactive activities we can do because we are continually out of dry erase markers. Please help me give my students the opportunity to learn as a community.
