Hello everyone, My name is Jessica Briski, 5th grade Teach for America teacher at Shamrock Gardens Elementary School, and have I got an easy proposal to accept for all donors out there! I've realized that my 'checks for understanding' could be way more effective if my students were able to independently show me their correct answers by using mini-white boards and dry erase markers. I already bought the white boards at the beginning of the year but the markers haven't lasted through mid-year. My students and I are making a request to have a class set of thin dry erase markers to use during class time for to ensure that everyone really 'gets it.' Along with my need for clarity, these markers will also give my students a chance to get away from the (often boring) pencil-and-paper math time. Oh, here's just a little info about our school, just in case you're not yet convinced.:o) Shamrock Gardens Elementary School qualifies as an Equity Plus school in Charlotte, NC, which means that approximately 92% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. We have a marginal population of students that are living in homeless shelters and transitional housing. Most of our students are considered 'working-class poor,' meaning their parents work day and night to provide for them, but, in turn, we are without a PTA that could provide classes with great resources like dry erase markers. In conclusion, here's the perfect math equation: great kids + a needy school + DonorsChoose = math time fun with dry erase markers!
