Hard work...works! My 27 4th graders are kind, bright and eager learners. I have a wide range of learning and economic needs and we're in this venture together. They know they can do hard things!
Students learn that little choices matter.
Real-life applications to lessons are key in my class - careers that use multiplication (Math), how often favorite authors were rejected (JK Rowling) yet persevered, the effects of invasive species/change (Science). They empathize with characters in books and Utah history. Each year my students are challenged to make their beds for a week after watching a favorite speech, surprising their parents and themselves with how choosing to make their bed can affect other areas of their lives.
My Project
Dry erase markers and sharpies are costly, but those are what kids like to use for lesson practice, stations and to outline during art projects. Many students are already asking for a replacement dry erase marker I provided at the start of the year, but start-up funds are gone.
With markers to use at math stations and a plethora of other activities, I can offer colorful and ready-printed materials to re-use all year long and for years to come by using the dry-eraser sleeve boards to slip papers in and out.
Students can be independent and responsible with the materials. Whether for daily projects or small stations in all subjects, these can cut down on copies. Students learn without the hassle of what to do with another piece of paper.
Students enjoy outlining or labeling with Sharpies, and sometimes to enhance art projects. Pens are a favorite means to correct papers with and highlighters are a helpful tool in reading comprehension.
