This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public high school in Hartford. Being a Spanish teacher, I have the opportunity to connect some of my Hispanic students with their own culture and heritage, while also introducing my native English speakers to their second language. My students are bright, curious, young minds who are constantly asking questions and looking for answers.

Their future goals range from joining the military to attending Oxford to opening their own art studios.

My goal is to find a way to make sure that learning Spanish will be beneficial for any of their future endeavors.

My Project

Each day, when we are practicing grammar and vocabulary, my students take out their dry erase boards. Each student as his/her/their own dry erase board and marker. This ensures that all students are participating and learning. Additionally, since they have their own materials, they can work at their own pace and they must depend on their own work. They cannot see the other students' work so it keeps them from copying and helps them to focus on their own work.

Individual practice and repetition is so beneficial in language learning, but it's so difficult to create in a language classroom.

Dry erase boards and markers make that possible. Since we use them so often, we go through markers very quickly. It has come to the point where students need to share one marker between three of them because we have so few markers. This is negatively affecting their learning.
