Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an inner city school in Cincinnati, Ohio where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. 70% of our students are Hispanic. Many of my students are ELL (English Language Learners).
Despite many hardships in their young lives', my fifth grade students are excited to learn.
They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can in order to be successful one day. Every day my students inspire me and make learning fun.
My Project
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them a fun way to practice math skills. Ongoing practice is a key element in our classroom. Throughout the day, students have many opportunities to practice their skills with dry-erase boards: during whole group instruction, at math stations, during tutoring with volunteers, with partners, and independently.
It is beyond words how excited my 5th graders get when I say, "Let's get out the whiteboards." If I said, "Let's get a pencil and paper and practice math," it would not be the same response.
Literally just using the dry-erase boards and colorful markers with a little eraser seems to motivate students. The boards also help me promote the growth mindset attitude regarding making mistakes. We can easily erase them and try again on these boards. Students love dry-erase boards so much, that when given free time, many will get with a partner and use the boards to help each other on math skills!
The dry-erase answer boards are fun for when we are practicing quick fluency drills. Students hold them up and I give them a thumbs up. Repeat, repeat. It is a quick check that students enjoy. I also included cleaners for the boards. I have found 5th grade students are eager to clean and take care of their supplies. In the past, my students have cleaned the boards every Friday at the end of the day. These wipes make that a quick, easy task.
