Dry Erase Boards are Remarkable!

Help me give my students dry erase boards for the opportunity to practice math skills and strategies without having to waste paper and erasers.

My Students

I teach a fifth grade classroom filled with diverse students who are all high spirited and eager to learn. As students that attend a Title I funded school, many of them come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, therefore I have learners on many different levels. However, despite what my students may deal with at home, I provide an environment rich with learning that feels like a second home. My students support each other and continuously encourage each other to do the best that they can do and frequently acknowledge each other's accomplishments. As a first year teacher, I have been blessed with a kind-hearted and inclusive classroom full of lifelong learners.

My Project

As a first year teacher I did not have many resources available for my students. I am thankful for my colleagues for passing on their used resources. However, some of the white boards we are using have pieces missing from them, don't erase the way they should, and are showing their age.

My class uses tissues to erase their work on their dry erase boards.

My students are very resourceful when it comes to their learning, so several students suggested that we use tissues to erase their boards when necessary. Although this works well, it wastes tissues that are always needed in the classroom. With the new erasers that come with the set of dry erase boards, my students will be able to use the proper tools and conserve resources within the classroom.

If my project is funded , I intend to use the dry erase boards as a tool for math instruction. These boards will help solidify my students' math facts and fluency. We frequently use our dry erase boards to review multiplication, division, addition and subtraction with whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Dry erase boards are also beneficial during small group instruction because they are engaging activities that allow for mistakes to be corrected by a quick swipe of the eraser.

With the remaining materials, I plan to use the Math 4 Today books as a spiral review throughout the year. These books cover many different standards and review topics taught in fourth and fifth grade. With this consistent practice, students should make greater gains throughout the year. The flashcards will be used for small group time or for when students complete independent work and wish to practice their fact fluency with a partner. The write and wipe multiplication boards will also be used during small group interventions.
