Student success is measured by the learning that students are able to show they have gained. In stating this, there are many ways for students to show they have learned any given material. It is simple to just have every student complete a worksheet to show their progress, but it is not very engaging for them. It is extremely motivating, however, for students to be able to use dry erase boards and markers to solve problems in class. These materials help the teacher to quickly and easily assess which students have gotten the concept and which ones need a little extra help. Math is a subject that you cannot just stand in front of your class and teach. The students need to practice in order to become more skilled at solving problems. Rather than hand my students a worksheet with problems to solve, I would much rather get my students excited about practicing by using dry erase boards. I teach 4th grade at an urban school district. I currently have 27 students in my classroom, but am projected to have 30+ at any time. It is difficult to always get around to all of my students to check the problems they are working on in a timely manner. If I had a dry erase board and marker for every student I would be able to assess much more quickly those students that are struggling and also be able to move those students that have "got it" to a higher level. Even more important than my being able to quickly assess my students' needs, the dry erase boards and markers would get my kids excited about learning. It is nice for me to see my students excited about school, especially since I know that something "fun" to them is also educational. When the students are excited, much more learning takes place!
