I am a high school social studies teacher at a school in Brooklyn, NY. I started a drum line this year to teach students the technique and discipline necessary for marching percussion. While the school has a fledgling music program, and the music teacher has been extremely supportive of my program, there is little quality percussion at the school, and no marching percussion. Therefore, we practice on chairs, and use mismatched equipment for our shows. The students' dedication is shown by the fact that our "chair practice" hasn't deterred them one bit; they come each week, on their own time, hungry to play and learn. In order to move this to the next level, and play shows that the students can really be proud of, I would like to order "real" marching percussion. The equipment is not cheap (which is why I am breaking this proposal into several parts), but quality equipment pays for itself in the long run; with good care, these drums should last 10 years or more. I am a strong believer that music can be an enormously beneficial part of a student's life. Playing on a drum line teaches creativity, discipline, goal-setting and teamwork. With quality equipment, the payoffs will be even greater. Thanks!
