My music students absolutely love to make beats in music class. They beat on the chairs, on the floor, on tables, and sometimes on themselves. We desperately need quality drums on which they can beat!
I have the most AMAZING students!
All 500 of them teach me just as much,if not more, than I teach them. I teach at a PK-5 elementary school in Irmo, SC. We are a true Title 1 neighborhood school and also a leadership magnet school. We've surpassed all academic benchmarks set by other schools facing the same adversity and I truly believe it is because we have such strong teachers and administrators who consistently put the students first. I desperately want my students to have access to quality music instruments. They deserve it.
My Project
All 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students use African drums to play different rhythms in music class. 4th and 5th grade students play these drums during drum circles where they learn how to use their rhythm patterns to make rhythm complements and layered ostinati, or repeated patterns. The 5th grade drum class performs twice a year for parents and family members. I have several tubano and djembe drums which the students use; however, many of them are old and do not sound great. Several of the drum heads have loosened up and because they are pre-tuned, I cannot tighten them up. I have also had to replace the rubber "feet" on a few of the tubanos as they often get bent or broken after years of use. We would love some new quality, durable, and tunable tubano drums on which to play during our drum circles in music class.
New tunable tubano drums will help our students to improvise, perform, and compose rhythm patterns.
As students play these drums, they will be able to truly learn proper drumming techniques as they can now hear and feel the difference in sound with the quality drum. As they drum together, everyone will benefit from the quality tubano sound!
