The students at our school have untapped musical talent waiting to be developed. They have been asking for musical experiences like talent shows and a school choir for the last few years.
They come from homes who are not able to provide them with the musical opportunities they seek.
We hope to provide them with opportunities to learn the basics of musical notation, songs that help them express their emotions and opportunities to create and perform. Percussion instruments will help.
My Project
Pitched instruments such as a xylophone give children a hands on experience with reading notes and make a beautiful accompaniment to their singing. Drums can provide an experience in reading rhythms. Both Xylophones (pitched percussion) and drums (non-pitched percussion) can be used for drum circles giving children an experience in ensemble playing as well as an improvisational experience. Thus this set of instruments can be both educational and a form of musical expression.
Having an assortment of drums to choose from gives an experience with varied pitches and timbres and can also be used to teach about music from other cultures.
