My Students

We are a great school with 500+ elementary students; all of whom come through my classroom twice a week. They love to learn and love to play and in music class, so I try to allow for both. The school itself is a wonderful place that allows students to learn in a safe and kind environment. I am very proud of our school for being innovative, and our principal supports teachers thinking outside the box. Teachers are always looking to find ways to create excitement and curiosity in their students, and I am no different in that regard.

My Project

Last year a student showed me a video of a fitness activity they saw online called Drums Alive. It uses fitness balls and drumsticks and gets students moving to music and drumming at the same time. They were very excited about the thought of getting to drum on exercise balls! After watching I got very excited about doing it as well.

Our school would like to find ways to help kids learn to be fit not only in class, but at home as well.

So we were fortunate enough to get exercise balls, drumsticks and baskets and do a trial run of this at the end of last school year. We did find that we need 15 more stability balls that are larger in size so that taller students have easier access. The students and staff all love this unit and we are very excited to do it again this year. This is the unit that the PE teacher and I worked together on collaboratively so that we can incorporate music and fitness together and show students how easy it is to do this at home.
