This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each of my students has a hearing loss and uses technology to learn listening and spoken language. Students wear hearing aids, cochlear implants, or bone anchored hearing aids (BAHAs). Our Deaf/hard of hearing classroom is in an urban public school with over 80% of its students experiencing poverty.
My three and four year old Deaf and hard of hearing students are curious learners!
They love music! Because of their hearing losses, drums are an excellent musical instrument to provide the exceptional benefits of musical instruction in an accessible way.
My Project
This school year will begin virtually, and it is unknown when we may be able to meet again face-to-face. Drumming and musical education are proven to enhance student's social-emotional, physical, and mathematical learning. I will deliver the drums to each student to use at home for their personal use, and also for virtual group social-emotional, drumming, and math lessons. For example, we may have a lesson about channeling our energy or anger in positive ways by drumming, or we may learn counting and patterning skills by keeping or creating a beat. Drumming will be a fun way to enhance learning!
