This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

While I love our K-8 school and the community it brings, one disadvantage our small cohort of middle school students has is the lack of elective classes, and especially any music instruction during their school day. Fortunately, in addition to being a teacher, I am also a musician. This year, it is my desire to teach my students desktop drumming as part of our movement breaks and art time.

Using pool noodles, my students will not only be able to learn musical concepts, but get a cardio workout and movement break as well.

Desktop drumming uses pool noodles cut in half as huge drumsticks with student desks being used as the drum. By playing with music and utilizing different parts of the desk and floor, students can get exercise as well as learn how to play together. There are even workouts now labeled as "cardio drumming" online.

In addition, I am also ordering some regular drumsticks for the project as I plan to add other drum objects to our music sessions as my students get better at learning rhythm and musical notation.
