We are a township school located just outside of our state capital. We serve nearly 700 students and their families in our area, many from low-income households. Our students are hard working, creative, and starving for more opportunities to express themselves musically. I am striving to get world music drumming started in our school!
We do not have enough drums to use for classroom use or for drumming ensembles.
We currently have 5 drums, and music classes can have up to 36 students at one time. Multiple students must share an instrument during class time, and receive less than acceptable time to practice new skills. Having more instruments will increase music making opportunities in the music room.
Can you help us grow?
My Project
Our new drums will be used by all students at our school. We will use them to practice rhythm patterns, create and improvise our own music, and learn how to play ensemble music.
Learning how to drum is a lesson in cooperation, respect, collaboration, and focus - in addition to practicing emerging music skills!
Many students who struggle in typical music class settings, improve their musical and social-emotional abilities after being exposed to drumming activities.
Imagine an entire classroom performing a multi-instrument drumming piece in perfect harmony, singing & playing anything from African rhythms to modern pop music, and creating compositions of their own - that is what you will be providing to our students!
