My Students

My students come from a high poverty background and are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom. They are most amazing students I could ever ask for. My students love music and they never fail to astonish me with their creativity!

Every student plays a part in our success - whether that student is an initiator and leader, or an observer and encourager.

Each student's role is respected and celebrated.

The goal in my classroom is to create a safe, supportive environment where everyone has access to drums and other instruments in order to create and perform music.

My Project

Drumming is a fun way for students to experience music, regardless of grade level. When students are learning and creating percussion pieces, a sense of community is developed - everyone is working for the common goal of a well performed piece of music. It is my hope to acquire enough Remo Tubano drums to have a full drum circle to further help build community in the Music classroom.

Drumming is a way for students to gain sensory input and work out feelings in a healthy, productive way.

Many of my students have been affected by trauma, insecurity of basic needs, and other environmental obstacles. Drumming helps them to begin to feel a sense of calm. For students who experience trauma, the sense of community built by creating and performing music together can help students feel calmer and more connected to others.
