This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
One evening this past May I was sitting at home when I got the phone call saying I was chosen to be the new music teacher for my school. Immediately my brain went into hyper-drive thinking about my new students! I haven't had the opportunity to meet them yet, but am looking forward to it every day.
I know that they are excited and passionate about music through stories I've heard from our principal and pictures I've seen from their past programs, which brings me to my next point.
Being the music teacher, I get to see every student in the school twice each week! I know that many of my students come from low income households. My job is to provide them with experiences and lessons that will enrich their appreciation and understanding of music for the rest of their lives.
My Project
We will use our drums daily. While you can teach many aspects of music without instruments, the drums add another layer that enriches the quality of instruction. Not to mention that they're also a lot of fun!
The students will learn how to keep a steady beat, experience world music, explore tone color, create their own music compositions, and so much more.
This means that every donation truly counts toward the education of hundreds of students. Having all these different drums allows everyone to get an instrument and contribute, which is crucial to the development and confidence of young musicians.
