Drumming To A New Beat

My students need a soul cajon drum for exposure to different types of hand drumming instruments, as well as exposure to the history and culture associated with a particular drum.

My students are fantastic!!!

They are always enthusiastic about drumming and willing to learn new ideas. I have a very diverse group of students both socially and culturally, and that is to be expected in California. My students range from grades K-5 and my typical school week consist of teaching hand drumming and percussion in an Orff methodized curriculum for my students grades k-2 and teaching my students grades 3-5 by method of oral traditions, as drums have been taught for centuries. In a typical week, I teach upwards of 184 students.

My Project

The ability to play drums is in our genes. Human beings have been drumming for millions of years, so trust in what your body can do. Drumming is an activity all ages can both enjoy and share. You don’t have to be a genius or a prodigy to enjoy playing drums. I believe that allowing people, especially children, to play drums helps them to discover potential that comes unbidden from the spirit rather than deliberately from the brain.

While music making in general emphasizes performance, group drumming does not; it is largely communal, so that in just minutes, people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and abilities join together and achieve immediate success.

I would like my students to be exposed to all types of hand drums, from both different cultures and different music genres. My hope is to help build a sense of community and tolerance by exposing my students to hand drums of different cultures.
