As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, I can experience first hand the impact of the arts on Kids. We try to give to our students the experience of music education. Currently, we offer general music and band.
Occasionally, our students will have sung in choir at church or have learned to rap through friends and family, but only a few had touched a musical instrument.
Our school is unique, a small school in the heart of the Bronx we serve from 6th to 12 grades .
They are vibrant students eager to learn and to experience the world.
I am hoping to continue encouraging our scholars to be creative in a positive manner and help develop their love of the arts.
My Project
In music, we teach how many different cultures and types of people have influenced music and how we, as musicians, would not be where we are without these people.
In modern band, everyone is welcome; however, they need a proper instrument to be self-motivated students.
Our band does not have a drum set for our modern band class, concert, or class room. Our students teach each other through peer teaching and teach the young players how to play. Our students do a great job but we do not have the drums to keep adding to our band.
With this new instrument students can and will be able to learn in an environment that promotes learning and success. Without a proper working instrument students become discouraged and give up. This will help our learning environment by providing the much needed equipment.
