I teach in a K-8 school that has a high Title 1 population. My students are a mixed group of 6th through 8th grade students who are excited about making music together. Our program is small but growing every year.
The mixed grades paradigm we find ourselves in fits our school mission of developing future leaders very well.
Since we have beginners and experienced students in the same room at the same time, we get the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships that will help our students find success as music makers, but also as individuals in life as well.
To provide my students with the most authentic band experience, I need to be able to provide them with the appropriate instruments. Just about every piece of music written for concert band includes the bass drum. The bass drum, played in tandem with other percussion instruments provides the rhythmic engine to every piece we play.
Without the bass drum, my students will not be able to develop the understanding of how all of the wind and percussion sounds are supposed to blend together.
Having this bass concert drum, a bass drum stand, and a bass drum mallet will allow the percussion students to develop their skills at playing the big drum, and will help the students train their ear to the heavy whump that it makes to keep the music going
