Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are growing up in one of the highest poverty areas in the city. Access to outside and community events is usually very limited due to monetary constraints or transportation. The other hurdle they sometimes face is the language barrier as 85% of them are fluent in others languages besides English.
My students are very kinesthetic and love to move to music!
Everything we do in PE involves music and movement, however drumming would take this combination to a whole new level.
My Project
In Physical Education I thrive on finding new units to teach my students. I feel that I owe them the opportunity to try new things and experience a plethora of fun and exciting units. Physical Education should provide life long learning and enhance students lives beyond physical fitness levels.
This drumming unit will allow me to teach and address a variety of things.
The focus will be rhythm and drumming, how different musical notes work together to create a rhythm and beat, as well as the ability to incorporate fitness into the movement aspect of drumming.
The sixty students in each class will work in partners sharing one stability ball and each having their own pair of Boomwhackers. The majority of the PE units are built around partners which is great for building life long social skills and this is something the students are already very familiar with.
To make this new unit a reality I am depending on others and I am very appreciative of the support. Thank you!
