My students are amazing children with severe educational needs. They have IDEA disabilities of severe autism, intellectual disabilities, and language needs. Finding new methods that help develop their ability to strengthen brain connections through rhythm and movement will help them grow academically.
My students need alternate teaching strategies and methods that include kinesthetic and auditory methods.
Their attention span and ability to focus makes it difficult to maintain their interest in traditional activities. By utilizing rhythm and movement, they will build stamina for learning.
My students recently fell in love with rhythm instruments after watching an assembly with a drum line. They were so excited and wanted to learn to drum. This project will provide a variety of rhythm instruments to help each child participate to the best of their ability.
Research shows that drumming can be a powerful tool to help special needs students address social needs, fine and gross motor skills, communication needs, and emotional and cognitive needs.
As they develop the ability to follow the rhythm and learn more complex patterns, their ability to make connections in their brains also increases. My students with significant special needs can experience the joy of making their own music with this project!
