I teach in a substantially separate special education classroom with students of various ages, levels of need and socioeconomic backgrounds. My students are placed in my program from any of the schools in the district, if they need a higher level of support than can be provided in a typical classroom model.
My students have significant challenges in the areas of social emotional development, language pragmatics, social skills, behavior, emotional regulation and executive functioning skills.
Despite these challenges, they are curious, engaged and excited learners and members of our school community.
My Project
After witnessing how drum lessons have positively impacted one of my students, I am looking to provide a more traditional and yet developmentally appropriate music lesson format. Our music teacher has offered to help provide time for lessons, but we need drums and books to help the students receive drumming lessons that mirror what their typically developing students are getting.
Many of my students have tried instrument lessons in the past, but due to their oral motor, fine motor and gross motor challenges, most of them quickly were not able to continue lessons.
Drums offer an opportunity for the students to practice the important parts of instrument lessons like timing, rhythm and pacing, without the adding the challenges of reading letter notes, regulating oral motor skills and other aspects of other instruments.
