My students need snare drums and snare stands to enhance their musical learning experience.
Did you know that music improves achievement for kids academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually? My little percussion players learn on a practice pad. It would be so wonderful if they could experience the joy of drumming on an actual snare drum!
Once a week my fourth and fifth grade band students experience the joy of learning a musical instrument.
They walk in eager to learn and happy to be in band. They are joyful and enthusiastic.
Honestly, I have never had even one bad day working with them. Our school is located in a low-income, underprivileged area. The school is 92% Hispanic. 94% are on free or reduced lunch. This school is on a Program Improvement Plan. The school library has a total of 25 school band instruments for student check out. The band program received over 100 band applications, all hoping to borrow a school loaner instrument.
Typically, percussion students learn on a practice pad. They are relatively inexpensive, (at least compared to a saxophone), fit nicely in a backpack, and don't drive family members koo-koo-crazy! However, the addition of actual snare drums to the band class will give students the opportunity to experience the real deal. Imagine how excited they will be when they strike the drum head on a snare drum. Instead of the muffled thud of a practice pad, they hear a crisp, sharp, bright, snappy rat-a-tat-tat sound. This will enhance their experience, add to the artistic process, keep them interested and motivated. How proud they will be performing at the end-of-the-year concert.
Simply stated: A band program requires instruments.
A thriving band program requires lots of instruments. If you want to truly hook and inspire the percussion student, put a drum in front of him.
The bottom line: By exploring music, students find natural connections to social studies, science, reading, language arts, writing, and mathematics.
Learning an instrument is all-inclusive. It builds confidence, provides a positive outlet, and is joyful.
