Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in East Los Angeles, all of our students come from very diverse backgrounds and it would be difficult to paint them all with a broad brush. Our students reflect the diversity of our neighboring community, and our students come from a wide range of economic and racial backgrounds. About a third of our students are on the spectrum and about 10% come to school dealing with behavioral issues stemmed from trauma. Whereas, our TK-8 program test scores are in the top ten percentile from our county, the second largest school district in the nation.
Young students who experienced high levels of stress or trauma really benefit from our social-emotional based art class.
Our students come to school for a place that makes them feel like they are part of a safe community. Students at our school are learning about who they are, that we are all interconnected, and how to be positive change makers.
My Project
For students who struggle in academic subjects and emotional regulation, drumming offers an opportunity for students to shine. New findings show that drumming is also highly effective for special education classrooms. With drumming, one can participate as much or as little as one likes, yet still, be engaged and feel part of the group which makes it an all-inclusive, non-verbal, and self-contained activity with a therapeutic dimension involving such elements as positive affirmations, emotional coping strategies, and guided interaction with rhythmic activities serving as a metaphor for life, the drumming activity is then followed by reflection and meaningful dialogue—without the stigma of therapy.
To help support our high-risk students we are looking for a variety of healing sound percussion drums.
The nested drums store perfectly for the classroom and djembe drums will help provide a variety of sounds our drum circles. Shared creative experiences offer organic opportunities for meaningful dialogue. Rhythmic strategies can be utilized easily in classrooms as a kinesthetic tool for facilitating learning, cooperative behavior, and a positive classroom environment.
