This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a small public charter school that borders four larger public school districts. Our students are mainly inner city kids from low-income areas of the city. These students have been through a lot, i.e., high crime, the city water crisis, and poverty.
My school is a Title I school where 100% of the students are on free breakfast and lunch.
Students also receive a backpack of food to take home on the weekends to make sure they have food at home to eat.
My Project
My students love to drum on their desks showing their creative love of music. Being in a poverty stricken area, beating out a rhythm is one of the few ways these students have to express themselves. I would rather put students on an instrument to create their music on than drumming on their desks or chairs.
Obtaining a drum set will give my students an instrument they can create their ‘beats’ on.
And to show off their drumming skills. I have some real talented drummers who will benefit playing a drum kit. Plus, adding a drum set to our performances will add depth and rhythm to our music.
