I am the music teacher at a wonderful K-5 elementary school that serves around 300 students. Like most elementary schools, our students come to us from various economic backgrounds, with roughly half of them on free or reduced lunch. They all have unique abilities, strengths, and talents.
It is my pleasure, and the joy of my day, to share my love of music with my students.
I aim to make music classes full of energy and fun, while also teaching skills that they can take with them into their future middle school, high school, and adult musical experiences. Students in my music room know to come in ready to participate and have fun!
My Project
The sound of the drum speaks to people of all cultures and brings joy to the hands that play them. Drums can come in all shapes and sizes and are played all around the world by people of all generations.
Because drumming is so universal, I like to use it in my elementary music classroom to engage all of my students.
I use a curriculum called World Music Drumming that teaches different rhythms from different countries. These activities are fun and engaging and get all students participating.
Currently, my classroom only has 12 drums. I am looking to expand my collection so that I can eventually own a classroom set of 30. This will create a ratio of one student to one drum, instead of having to share drums or take turns. I look forward to watching our collection grow!
