Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, inquisitive, and expressive in music. They love to attend their music classes every week as they explore the joys of singing and playing instruments. We learn music from TK-6th grade at our school. This is our second year building a new music program, so we have a long way to go to establish a thriving program in which all students can play and perform.
As we grow a brand new music program from the ground up, we are working hard to make music accessible to all students.
Over 80% of our students are from low-income families and would not otherwise have access to affordable instruments or private lessons. My students are fearless and eager to seize the opportunity to learn music through a wide variety of instruments and styles.
My Project
Students of all ages learn about elements of music, especially beat and rhythm. At the moment, our school does not have drums for students to apply their learning on. We are limited on our instrumental resources as this is a new music program in its second year.
By supplying my students with a wide variety of drums, they can explore rhythm patterns and sounds in a fun and exciting way.
Furthermore, restorative drum circles are a great way to build a sense of community and musical communication. These drums can be used to teach students to watch, listen, and respond in the language of music.
