Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a large public school in Newark, NJ that serves a wide variety of students with different goals and needs. As an educator in a high-poverty/low-income school district, I see that my students are faced with many challenges, both inside and outside of the classroom. Despite the challenges they may face, they still arrive at school ready to learn and passionate about their own interests in education.
My students are heavily invested in the arts and desire every opportunity they can get to participate in them.
Currently, our school provides students with the opportunities to choose electives to study the visual or performing arts they are most interested in. This allows our middle school students to experience a more rigorous education in a subject they are truly passionate about.
My current instrumental students are always ready to perform for anyone who walks through the door!
My Project
My students are working hard on their instruments to prepare for various shows and experiences. This year we are looking for strings and drum pads so students can have a better experience in class and at home. The drum pads will help the percussion practice their craft and the strings will provide the violinists with more confidence on their instrument.
Students who are able to practice at home will have a more successful year in class.
Currently, my percussion players are unable to carry or take home percussion equipment due to transportation to and from school. This will allow them to easily carry their own equipment home and practice like the rest of the band.
