Drum Circle Collaboration for Special Needs Students
Help me give my students the opportunity to experience the collaboration and unity of participating in drum circles through the use of djembe drums.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at PRHS hail from blue collar, working class families. They appreciate what they have and what they work hard to achieve. They are generous, respectful, and will go out of their way to assist those in need.
Situated on the edge of the Everglades, they enjoy a myriad of outdoor activities such as 4 wheeling, swamp buggies, and air boats.
They are competitive both on the athletic fields as well as in the classrooms. They have an uncanny devotion to the school whose motto is "One school, one family." And they truly live by that mantra. They also have a commitment to learning, and some graduates have left to attend a number of the most prestigious colleges in the nation while others have opted to serve the country in the military.
My Project
Students with emotional and behavioral disorders live lives lacking of structure, order, collaboration, cooperation, and other critical life skills that most people take for granted. These students struggle with social skills and often find themselves being disciplined for inappropriate behavior. Unfortunately, there are few, if any, programs that strive to teach these students how to coexist with their peers.
Drum circles are magical experiences that foster a sense of belonging, community, and tremendous collaboration.
One tremendous advantage of participating in a drum circle is that one needs absolutely no music experience. All participants can achieve extremely high levels of success in a drum circle on their first experience. Positive effects of drum circles are:
* Improves motor strength and control
* Improves speech and communication
* Increases Social skills
* Enhances emotional expression and cognition
* Increases academic performance
* Improves confidence
* Reduces tension, anxiety, and stress
* Boosts the immune system
* Releases negative feelings and emotional trauma
Our goal is to help our students overcome many of the challenges they face on a daily basis so that they can function within our school and community as normal, responsible citizens.
