All students are special no matter their race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or their backgrounds. The students in this class are a great group of boys and girls ranging from ages 7-8 and with very different backgrounds. Some of the students are vegan, some are Hispanic, some are in transition between homes, and some have never been inside a school until this year. Each student has their own rhythm that they like to learn and move to. Some of our students enjoy sitting and working hard, while others like to move around and receive more of an active type of learning.
With great diversity levels within this one classroom, each student should have the chance to meet and exceed their own personal goals as well as the goals of our school and community.
Each student is showing significant growth already and will continue to grow throughout the rest of the year. As our community is also very diverse in background, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status these goals can be very different for each individual child. Within the classroom, this diversity is honored through the notion of choice. Choice in a 21st Century Learning environment that will foster all expectations and goals.
My Project
In a classroom of 34 learners, it can be hard to hear everyone read loud and clear. The use of a microphone that works well and has an engaging aspect will help encourage kids to speak up! As speaking is part of the common core standards and so is language, it is important that students get the chance to publicly speak. Many kids do not like to do this, but something as fun as throwing a ball that has a microphone within it can help these students feel more comfortable with this process.
Students can have fun speaking in front of their peers instead of worrying about whether or not they are doing a good job or not.
As students gain a sense of ownership to their work and understanding they can gain larger understandings of the world around them and become better learners who have more courage when it comes to talking to others.
