This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our Elementary school is located in Palatka, Florida; it is a Title 1 school which means that a large percentages of the students come from low-income families. According to the Economically Disadvantaged Free-Reduced Lunch (FRL) rate, 100% of the students receive either free or reduced lunch prices and 83% of the students were reported as a minority. The school has struggled to meet state standards receiving either a D or F for the past five years. But, that all is beginning to change.
The school maintains a low student:teacher ratio in order to better meet student needs; however, funding is limited to provide instructional resources and materials to support academics and I, being out of the classroom for five years, no longer have the resources either.
This is where you come in.....
My Project
My classroom library is a place where the students can learn to love reading; with these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books and will allow them to read independently at their own level.
Reading and writing go hand in hand.
To be a good writer, you have to be a good reader. The more you read, the better writer you'll become. Many of the books requested are by the same author or have been written about a similar topic. This was done intentionally and will allow me the opportunity to teach about the style of writing.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Putman and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
