Ms. Montoya from Boynton Beach FL is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a comfy area to sit and relax when they come in to my class. These bean bag chairs will allow them to DROP & READ for Independent Reading Time.

I love my students as my own children. They come from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and low economic homes. They are hungry for learning and they sure make me laugh with their curiosity and silly wonder questions. They are all in the 7th grade year and they are far more intuitive than they are given credit for. That being said, their comprehension level is not where it should be. My students struggle to really engage and be motivated with texts, even when they have a choice in the material they prefer to read. My students are drawn to things that are new or seem fun, thus my request for bean bag chairs for them to read in.
As an Intensive Reading teacher, every year I inherit students who lack interest in reading. This year, I am implementing a "Drop and Read Corner". This is a structure to make my classroom a more effective and welcoming place to be. This will allow my students to sit comfortably as they read a noel of their choice during Independent Reading time. As a single mother of two, I can not afford to fund a comfortable and inviting area in my classroom for students to WANT to go and sit to read. I selected bean bag chairs, an ottoman bean bag and an orange bean chair to be utilize for this time when students rotate to go to Independent reading. I know another teacher who last year sparked her reading area and the students were less reluctant to reading their books.
I would like to have the same option to encourage and incorporate into my reading corner an area where students can "DROP & READ!" without resistance.
I am looking forward to seeing my students change their attitude at coming to my room this year resisting to READ books when they are in SUCH need to improve their Lexile levels. When I looked at their data I felt terrible as many are reading 3 to 4 grades below 7th grade level.
To inspire READING this year, my room needs to be a place where is welcoming for them to "DROP and READ". I truly believe that by creating a more inviting learning environment, I can really make a difference in the lives of my students who I wish the best and improve their Reading Level as they are so far behind. I believe an inviting place will inspire my students to want to read with a structured and welcoming area.
