My Students
Our high school is one of the most diverse schools in the State of Oregon, with 67% of the student body belonging to ethnic groups other than white and 63% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our students are awesome, passionate and they want to be the change for our future. A large portion of our student population receives a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and many have experienced trauma throughout their lives. These continually make it even harder for our students to keep one foot in front of the other, which sometimes even closes doors for their future. Our teachers continually sacrifice to ensure students can grow in their education and in their life. We try to influence the experience they have in the school day with various teaching practices, social-emotional support, hands-on learning and project-based learning.
My Project
This is for my school's Drones class. This will allow students to experience flying drones as well as coding drones for autonomous exercises. Due to COVID-19 and distance learning, we do not have enough drones to send home for each individual student. To ensure we have a hands-on STEM experience, this project ensures our students to effectively learn the science behind drones and how to fly them safely. Students will also have the opportunity to study and take the FAA Remote Drone Certificate. This will provide students the opportunity to jump into a career of drone flying or jump-start their education in STEM.
