My students are ESL Pre-K students. Their families come from various countries. The students are limited English speakers or may not be able to speak English. Their families do not speak English or speak very limited English. My students come from low-income families and attend a Title I school.
My students and their families were affected by Hurricane Harvey and are slowly rebuilding their homes.
This is their first adventure in school for the children. They are afraid for the first few weeks, and then they begin to learn the English language quickly. It only takes a few months until they begin understanding and speaking English.
Many of our families are still working to rebuild their homes. Some of the children are not able to play in their homes and have limited toys in their temporary homes. Most of their toys were ruined when the water came in their homes. Many have moved back into their homes but a few are still not living in their homes.
My Project
All of my students want to come to school and learn in a safe, clean, organized environment. My students' homes were flooded by Hurricane Harvey. Many of them lost all of their toys and books. The school was fortunate not to have water damage.
I hope to give my students healthy juice to drink after rest time and recess to recharge their body and brains.
My students love to eat snack and have their drinks outside. We can observe the outside world as we are eating snacks and drinking outside while continuing to build our vocabulary and social skills.
While they are living in homes that are being repaired, it is important for them to be able to come to a school that can be their happy place. Our new school is complete and we moved into the new building in October. Our playground is finished and we were able to play outside today. We have one picnic table for the children to eat snacks on after we have rest time or recess. I hope to energize my students so they can continue to learn!
