My students need a classroom set of individual dry erase boards including a graph grid. In addition we need replacement markers to use with the boards.
I teach honors and regular geometry as well as honors Algebra II in a public high school in Mississippi. Most of my students are in the 9th or 10th grade and are planning to attend college. I teach my classes, especially the honors students, as a rigorous college prep curriculum.
No matter how well a math class is taught and how much technology is employed, students only master the content through practice, and that is usually boring. As a result, I try to find different ways to approach the necessary drill. Next year, our school district is moving to a 4x4 block schedule. This means more of the drill will be done during the class time. There will also be more opportunities to use cooperative learning activities which will improve their higher order thinking skills and, thus, better prepare them for college.
If I could secure a classroom set of individual dry erase boards with a graph grid on one side, along with replacement markers, I would be able to have the students use them as we spend moments during our class-time to practice the material being presented. They would allow me, at a glance, to see who is working and who needs assistance. They also would be an added bonus to our group and cooperative learning activities, since they can be easily read by several people and can also be useful as they explain and demonstrate material to each other.
With your assistance, I can bring another dimension to my classroom and the necessary, but not always fun, drill that is an essential part of any math classroom. In this technological world, it is sometimes important to resort to the old-fashioned methods. I want to be able to go "old-fashioned" with a new twist. Small things can make a big difference in our students and their approach to their learning. Any different way to practice and drill will make the students try a little harder and, therefore, achieve a better mastery of the topic.
