My Students

One of the best parts about my teaching job is the crazy joy, enthusiasm, and chaos that my students bring to the classroom each day. They come from incredibly diverse homes and they bring that diversity to the classroom. The best part is that our students are all open to diversity and they love to learn and share with others. They share willingly anything they have and they are incredibly open to discussions about their differences and similarities.

My students are very curious about the world around them, but many do not have the financial resources to have access to anything but the basics.

Many of my students are the first generation of children going to school in America. Many other children are in homes where finances are a challenge. Because of that, our teaching staff works hard to find creative solutions to keep students moving forward.

My Project

If we think that only adults are stressed in our current climate, we are very wrong. Students are feeling stressed and many of them do not have the skills to handle their stress yet. Some of my students just looked me in the eyes today and asked if we could do something to take their minds off the stress around them. They wanted to play a game, or just rest their eyes, or even just connect socially with their peers. They needed something that was going to help them balance the other forms of stress in their brains.

Students can learn how to be mindful when they see it modeled and when they have the tools to practice it on their own.

With the items I'm requesting, we can do a variety of activities to help us re-center our minds when we are feeling frazzled. From watching a marble draw patterns on the sand with the Drift Sand Table while we practice our slow breathing, to playing a silly game that relies on reading the bodies of our peers, to having positive visual messages around us, we can make this happen.

We are teetering on the edge of going back to distance learning for a period, and even that isn't going to solve the stress. The kids need leadership and guidance on how to navigate their social experiences with their peers. Practice is what will help them develop those skills.
