Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach three general education classes 7th grade classes in an urban district. Their families struggle financially and most parents work several jobs. Many students tell me they see their parents in passing as they are running from one job to the next. So I strive to make my classroom a safe and happy haven and their home away from home!!

The school district has suffered so many budget cuts, that I am left with very little money to purchase anything other than mandated material.

Without funding the simplest of supplies slip through the cracks.

My Project

So I started off the year with markers, or so I thought. It seems though the summer heat dried up my markers. Or maybe it was general wear, tear, and age. Either way I have been hearing “Mrs. Walsh my markers are dried out!”

I try to integrate art into my Language Arts Room as much as possible.

Kids love to draw and color. One of my favorite project deals with seeing color and using it to see themselves. In the novel “The Giver” the main character sees color for the first time and each color symbolizes something to him. I have my students use abstract drawing to show colors that are meaningful to them. The pictures are pretty extraordinary and the kids really go all out. I love how much joy it brings them to have a finished project. These Mr. Sketch and Crayola markers will help my students draw in color!
