Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Coaching in a low income/high poverty area for the past 5 years, I have seen first hand how big of an impact sports can have in a child's life. Athletics is a great teacher, that helps students learn life lessons that they do not always get at home. An opportunity that can turn an at-risk youth into a college-bound scholar.
Our sports program is one of the few chances many of our students get to live like a normal teenager.
A large number of our students have begun working to help with household bills; as well as spending a very large amount of time raising younger siblings. These students care so much about their families at home, and participating in sports gives us a chance to show them how much we care about them as part of our family.
My Project
It's a sad year for our state in education. There are no textbooks or supplies. Our school budgets look like Jack the Ripper has been at them with a red pen. No one is feeling the pain more than inner school sports programs.
In larger, wealthier districts, students have support from large parent organizations to provide for minimum basic sporting needs.
Our school does not have that luxury. I am needing simple things that any program would need to be a success. We need a portable air pump to keep all of our basketballs inflated. I am also needing gym floor number dots and cones to help with drills and team play positioning. in addition, we could use a portable ice chest that can be carried to away games and used in practices and scrimmages for hydration and to store ice for injuries.
A major problem we have is needing equipment to record the team in action during games to be able to discuss errors and successes. The camera and tripod will be used to video sporting events so more in depth coaching and improvement in play.
Please help our team achieve these items to attain success in their school sporting events!
