Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Being the school counselor, one of my main responsibilities is to address the needs of the "whole child" and treat every student holistically. My students come with varying needs, and over 90% belong to impoverished homes. Their diverse cultures, needs, and experiences mean that one size does not fit all when it comes to guidance and counseling.

Due to their parents' economic status after Hurricane Maria and Irma, and the fact that these children attend a Title I school where resources are limited, basic needs such as access to school uniforms and school supplies are always ongoing issues.

We are slowly receiving students impacted by Hurricane Maria, who need my assistance more than ever.

At my school, I wear many hats and I facilitate a vast diversity of students' and teachers' needs alike. Currently, the capacity of my school budget has been limited and challenged due to the impact of Hurricane Irma. As the school counselor, I take a very active role in my students' lives. I visit classrooms daily and give presentations that build character and educate the students about hygiene, core values, and social behavior.

My Project

Just recently several of our students were chosen to represent our school at the upcoming Superintendent's Honors Concert. Shortly after, our music department informed me that we were entered into a music concert at the upcoming Youth Fair in March and that the formal attire was required.

Last year, we had students who could not afford the white top, black bottoms requirement and other parents had to pitch in to purchase these uniforms.

This year, those children and their parents have moved on as the kids are now in middle school. Not having the reliable support system as we did for almost five years, puts our school in a slight predicament.

When I did a survey, less than one-quarter of the 30 plus students who will be representing the school (boys and girls) owned a white shirt or acceptable bottom. This request is for the 12 boys that desperately need the required clothing to participate in March and April.

Your donation will impact these 12 boys as well as students who wish to participate in similar events this school year as well as years to come.

The uniforms will be returned after use, dry-cleaned and stored at our school after each performance for future events this year and every year we participate.
