Help me give my students a poodle skirt and other 50's accessories, Disco and 80s accessories, retro sunglasses and a hippie wig to enhance their knowledge and experiences with music through the decades.
All my students have significant developmental disabilities including cognitive and physical disabilities. They range in age from 3-21 years of age.
Due to the severity of their disabilities, they attend a separate school for students with those types of delays.
Most of the students come from low-income families. My students' needs are considered intensive, and they struggle with many day-to-day tasks. However, despite their difficulties with many everyday tasks of daily living, they thoroughly enjoy music therapy sessions and often "shine" during the activities presented.
My Project
Throughout the year I do several "themed" weeks in my music classes. The students and staff LOVE hearing songs from the disco era, the 80s, the 90s and Oldies. We also have themed dances throughout the school year and many staff enjoying pulling oldies but goodies out of their closets to dress up for these special occasions.
My students would get a better feel for the music and the "culture" of the decade if they had clothing and accessories to try on while they participated in group music sessions.
Additionally, the props could be used for Talent Show activities or other performances done through the year.
