Animal Systems students come from a variety of backgrounds. Diversity in this class includes English Language Learners, Special Education students, and low income students. Many of these students have not been successful in typical science classroom environments but thrive in the Agriculture Sciences. Most of the students in Animal Systems have been successful in my Animal Biology class and have a passion for animals. They enjoy learning about animals and enjoy learning with animals. We work collaboratively to get a strong background on animal husbandry, as well as the anatomy and physiology of animals. This helps prepare students for the work world of animal sciences, as most of the students have goals to work within the animal industry. It is our goal to create learners. These students work hard to research and create plans for keeping animals healthy.
My Project
Students in Animal Systems are really excited to work with animals. Part of their work with animals is dressing the part. As we begin to prepare ourselves for the world of work, we dress the part of Veterinary Assistants and/or Technicians. Students are required to wear scrubs to do clinical practicums and handling of animals.
In our classroom, all students have the opportunity to succeed.
This includes students who do not have the financial means to buy the proper equipment. Students simply cannot handle an animal wearing some of the trendy clothing that is sold. Dogs thrash around as students try to restrain them, chickens try to fly away and cats can be unruly.
Many students have not been able to afford their own scrubs. This project is to purchase a closet of scrubs of various sizes for those students who cannot afford them. I have purchased sets of scrubs for students with my personal funds. Having a student dress the part helps them act the part and prepares them for the world of work.
