My Students
In September 2018, our area was hard hit by Hurricane Florence. The extreme flooding and winds created incredible hardships for our families, many of whom were STILL recovering from Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
Our schools are incredibly underfunded in North Carolina, and pre-kindergarten is one of the more forgotten populations.
Pre-kindergarten is usually at the bottom of the list when money IS available.
I teach pre-kindergarten in a low-income elementary school in North Carolina. My school serves children from pre-k to 5th grade. One hundred percent of our children receive free lunch. The students in my class were selected for our program because they are severely at risk. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and economic situations.
Although many of them have faced incredible adversity in their short four years, they come to school every day smiling, excited, and ready to learn. They are truly the best and sweetest group of children and bring such joy to each and every day.
My Project
My classroom furniture, dress up costumes, and materials haven't been updated since the early 2000s. The child-sized furniture in my dramatic play center is actually held together with duct tape. I have used colored contact paper to disguise and cover the chipping, splintering varnish on the shelves and furniture throughout my classroom.
Last year, I had to discard many of the multicultural costumes and community helper dress ups because they were literally falling apart.
Over the summer, I scoured thrift stores and consignment sales for suitable replacements, all at my own cost. Unfortunately, I was only able to find a few correctly sized items to put in my dramatic play center.
