My students are growing up in the same neighborhood and attending the same school that I did as a child. I feel such a strong connection to them and their successes because I know where they come from.
The community and parent involvement at my school is strong despite the socio-economic struggles that they face.
My students don't have many extra things at home so they are eager to come to school to have access to more. I believe that they deserve to have that access to the best learning environment and tools possible to help them be successful.
My Project
My kindergarten classroom is really starting to come to life this year with many new play spaces. There are spaces for sensory play, gross motor play, a puppet theater, and many many materials for building. One area that I would love to improve is the dramatic play space.
My students love to play pretend and act out the jobs of different community helpers.
We have a nonfiction unit of study where we read and learn all about important helpers in our community. Being able to add these new costumes to our classroom would really improve my students dramatic play. They would be so excited to get them!
