Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being a student and wondering what the future held? My students are unique individuals from diverse cultures. They are smart, creative kids that have struggled with a system of learning that assumes one size fits all. Three years ago, our school embarked on a journey - introducing our students to Big Picture Learning -with the sole mission of putting students directly at the center of their own learning.
It has been a successful journey for our students; they have enthusiastically embraced their learning.
Given this opportunity to direct their own learning, they have spent a considerable amount of time identifying their dreams and writing goals necessary to move toward fulfilling those dreams. These students have taken ownership of their learning and are incorporating goal setting and life skills that lead to becoming successful adults. It is a powerful journey we, as teachers and mentors, get to witness with these amazing teenagers.
Our school is located in rural Northern California. We have very few industries that pay a living wage for the families of our students. Steady employment and financial stability is an issue for 75% of our student body.
My Project
Visualizing a future is a daunting task. Writing goals is a life skill and having my students practice this skill each year encourages them to continue the practice of goal setting. Although, calling it goal setting may cause their eyes to glaze over; calling this skill a Dream/Vision Board, using art and inspirational quotes to build the skill of goal setting, has been very successful. The students analyze their Dream/Vision Boards and write short term, intermediate, and long term goals that are needed to reach those dreams. They learn to break down the big dreams into manageable chunks that are attainable.
A Dream/Vision Board is a tool used to build a collage of words and pictures that represent the student´s goals and dreams.
The purpose is to create a visual reminder of where students want to take their learning and their lives. To visualize future goals.
With poster board, markers, inspirational stickers, magazines and art work, students create their own unique Dream/Vision Board.
We spend days, sometime weeks, working on this project. It is a fluid project; students add new dreams and check off accomplished goals as the year progresses. This is a project done on a yearly basis - as students continue to grow, evolve and expand, their dreams do too. A Dream/Vision Board is meant to be kept and cherished. They chronicle not only dreams, but growth and achievements.
