My Students
My students come from a low socio-economic background. I serve a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free meals. We are a Title I school located in Brooklyn. We believe in having a healthy literacy program at the school. Reading is very important to the school's comprehensive instructional plan. Our mission is to prepare students for college and career readiness while building character so they will become well-rounded individuals. Many of our students lack those necessary skills to succeed.
At the school, there is a beautiful library that is filled with many outdated and low interest books underutilized by our students.
They are also afforded the luxury of having one to one iPads, but they lack the basic skills for success. While the reading scores are range from low to high the majority of the students are reading below grade level.
Librarians play a very significant role in the lives of the children we serve, however, many of the books at the in the library are outdated and are of no interest or very low interest to our students. Teaching students 21st-century skills require 21st-century supplies and books that our students can see themselves in.
My Project
As a librarian I know first hand how important it is for students to be able to read with fluency and comprehension, but just as this is very important so is being able to see oneself in the materials that they read. This makes their dreams a reality. It gives them hope that one day they to will see their dream come true.
It is my job to make sure that they dream and hope for the future by giving them the tools they need to succeed.
By giving them access to the materials and programs needed their dreams will not be deferred but will become a reality. At my new "Lit Cafe" I plan on instilling the love of reading and learning through small group instruction.
